Words from the mat

Six you will hear on your first day

道場

dōjō

The place where the way is studied. Not a gym: you bow on the way in and on the way out.

稽古

keiko

Practice. Literally "to think on the old": you repeat what others repeated before you.

礼

rei

The bow. It opens and closes the class, and every practice with every partner.

受身

ukemi

The fall. Half of aikido is learning to receive without breaking.

稽古着

keikogi

The practice uniform. Long sleeves are enough for the first few classes.

産靈

musubi

The knot: what binds two things and leaves them bound. Hence the name of the dojo.

取り・受け

tori / uke

The one who performs the technique and the one who receives it. They swap constantly.

正座

seiza

Sitting on your heels. Every class begins and ends this way.

お願いします

onegaishimasu

"I ask this of you, please." Said to your partner before practising together.

ありがとうございました

arigatō gozaimashita

"Thank you very much." Said when you finish.

段・級

dan / kyū

The grades. Kyu grades are examined by the dojo; dan grades are registered in Tokyo.

師範

shihan

"Model to follow." The title of the senior teachers who come to give seminars.
